About Konbini Baito
Why this game exists
Konbini Baito is made by a foreigner working in Tokyo. The konbini is where most of us hear real, fast, everyday Japanese for the first time, and it is often where textbook Japanese stops working. Nobody teaches you that 温めますか? means "shall I heat it?", or that 大丈夫です usually means "no thanks".
So this game puts you on the other side of the counter. You are the new part-timer (バイト, baito) at まいにちマート. Customers walk in and talk to you, and you ring them up. It is a safe place to practise listening before the real thing, whether you shop at a konbini every day or are about to start working at one.
What is in it
- Three levels, from slow and polite to masked customers who mumble and keep changing their order
- Nine kinds of customers and about 470 different customer lines, all voiced
- Romaji and English for every line, plus a tutorial with your senpai
- Guides to the phrases and numbers you hear at a konbini
The game is free and needs no sign-up. Voices are made with VOICEVOX. まいにちマート and all customers are fictional.
